I had the chance recently to mentor a group of four high school students as they documented the work being done by Rebuilding Together Aurora. The students were in the photography program at West Aurora High School, and their goal was to take documentary style photos of the volunteers working on the project.
Rebuilding Together Aurora is a group that helps low-income home owners with repair and upgrades they need to do to their homes. There are a number of different organizations that have members that volunteer their time and know-how to make the whole thing a success.
As the day rolled along I gave the students advice to help them take better photos of what was happening. I didn’t take many images myself because I was enjoying working with the students and seeing what they were doing. The four images you see in this post are mine, and represent just a small sliver of what happened that day. I did somehow manage to get a little white paint on my camera body… but most it rubbed right off :)
There were other professional photographers working with other groups. And in the end all the students entered their best photos in a competition and exhibit. You can see some of the photos taken by the students here:
