During my customary harddrive search for interesting images that will dazzle and amaze I found a few that I took for sculptor/artist Patrick Dougherty.

A few years ago he created this temporary structure he called Xanadu at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL. The scale might be deceptive in the image, but it was as big as a two story house and made entirely of sticks and twigs. There aren't too many times in my life that I can honestly say, "I've never seen anything like that before", but honestly... I haven't! It was a whimsical creation right out of a fairy tale. Unfortunately images just don't do it justice. This is one of those thing you had to see to believe.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Seeing as how this is Illinois and we do have a well earned reputation for politicians with the morals of street-corner thugs, it is wonderful to have a mayor like ours. He is at every function, every event, every parade, every ribbon cutting, and I can't imagine a person ever being a bigger cheerleader for a community than him.

When my son was in 3rd grade he came down the stairs one morning for school dressed in his nicest button down shirt, with his clip-on bowtie fixed firmly in place. I said, "Wow, what are you all dressed up for?" He looked at me a little surprised and said, "Mayor Pradel's coming to our class today." That's the only time he got dressed up like that in his 5 years of elementary school. Meeting the mayor is a big deal, and I'm glad we have somebody like him that the kids can look up to.

My daughter's class had a mock city council meeting, and the mayor surprised them by dropping by. They were all thrilled. By the way, my daughter is the one in the background in black with the big camera. She decided that her role for the mock council meeting was to act as the press photographer. In the past 5 weeks I've been to Boston, Toronto, New Jersey, and Germany. I really enjoy traveling, and each place provided me with a good story or two. But Germany was the most fun, and I thought I'd share some photos from that experience.

I was there with two other people; Tom- a photographer I work with, and Dan- a designer with an agency in Chicago. We spent the first part of the trip in Schesslitz. I'd never heard of the place, but with a name that sounds like a Milwaukee microbrew I knew it has to be the real deal. And I was right. It is a very tiny and picturesque Bavarian village that looks like things hadn't changed there in 40 years. I felt like I'd walked on to a movie set. We stayed in Hotel Schloss Burgellern, which is a beautiful old mansion with just the sort of five course dinner that you want after an 11 hour plane flight.

We were actually given rooms in a nearby building. We were told that it was because the TVs in those rooms had a few channels in English. I didn't really need to get caught up on any BBC comedies, but oh well. The first image below is the yellow building we stayed in. The second image shows you the main road in and out of the village. And yes, is really that quaint and cosy. If you ever really want to get away from it all, this is the place to do it. There were many beautiful barns in the village. Several of them were constructed with big, heavy beams. And then in-between the beams were sticks that were covered up using a homemade mixture of mud and manure. It sounds terrible, but looks wonderful :)

<a href="http://jeffreyworks.com/blog/uploaded_images/germany-13-770327.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Our driver Bert drove us there while doing 180 k/hr on the Autobahn, and playing us his unique mix of music which ventured back and forth between the Ramones and German soccer team fight songs.

As you have probably noticed, the area had quite a snow storm just before we arrived. It continued to flake off and on while we were there, occasionally giving me the impression that I was walking around in a souvenir snowglobe. Nuremburg is great for getting around on foot, with it's expansive pedestrian shopping areas and grand cathedrals. It also has something it's quite proud of- the Nuremberg bratwurt.

Nuremberg brats are different that regular ones because they're smaller. A little larger than a Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage, they are sold by numerous street vendors, and are placed three at a time on a small bun of handmade bread. Of course we had to give them a try.

After some shopping we stopped for dinner at Zum Gulden Stern, which turned out to be the oldest sausage restaurant in the world! Yeah, I know! You'd think that this is something I would have checked off my list long ago. But after a sizable German beer and 8 (yes, 8!) more Nuremberg brats I think I had enough of the real Bavarian experience to last me a few years. At least I finished it off with an apple strudel... you know, for the fruits and veggies.

<a href="http://jeffreyworks.com/blog/uploaded_images/germany-28-799140.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; It is a bit strange sending one's thoughts out there into cyberspace, so I was glad to hear from people that had read it and were touched by Father Michael's story. I even received messages from some people at Benedictine, which was a pleasant surprise.

I thought I'd follow up with a few photos from projects I've worked on over the years for other colleges, universities, and places of higher learning. I enjoy these type of assignments. Each university has it's own flavor, and it's fun trying to capture those images that show off the unique personality and character of the campus and student body.

I have worked on a few different projects for DePaul over the years. Interestingly, it didn’t take place in the most exotic location, or produce my favorite image of the year. But it was one of those moments that made me very glad that I am a photographer.

Benedictine University in Lisle, IL hired me to photograph Father Michael Komechak for use in a few promotional pieces. He was the curator of Benedictine’s art collection, and it was mentioned that I might be capturing him in front of some of the artwork. It was made pretty clear to me that Fr Michael had strong opinions about certain subjects, and he would have the final say as to exactly where and when this would all take place. In my mind I started to add up all the possible problems that go along with having an unknown setting with a 77 year old ‘opinionated’ subject.

I did one day of scouting for potential locations, just so I had a few ideas in case I needed to steer him in a certain direction. It was a cold winter day in early February when we finally met. Father Michael seemed nice enough and was actually asking my opinion on where I thought we should take the photo. I asked him where he spends most of his time, and what activities does he do on campus that would help tell the story. He thought for a moment and then casually mentioned to me, “Well, why don’t you come to my office.”

I’ve photographed in enough college offices to know that they are almost never interesting. They are full of stacks of papers, books, old computers, and random corkboards covered in colorful notes of paper. But Father Michael led me to a corner door which contained an office unlike any other. I expected to at least see a desk, and initially I couldn’t tell if there was one in there. Instead what I found were piles of paintings, sculpture, pottery, beadwork, African masks, and countless other things all haphazardly arranged in a way that made it look as though a tornado had just thundered through an art museum. There was hardly room to walk, and my one and only comment upon entering this place was “Oh, wow!”

<a href="http://jeffreyworks.com/blog/uploaded_images/blog1-736924.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We spent the next 2 hours talking about photography and art as he showed me through the collection. He knew every piece, who donated it, and where he thought it should be shown around campus. I learned that there were two additional rooms attached to the first one, also stuffed to the gills with artwork. The second room had hundreds and hundreds of paintings, all stacked up and leaning against each other. Well, I knew that this is where the story was. This is Father Michael’s passion. This is where the photos needed to be.

He agreed wholeheartedly, and we spent about 20 minutes in the first room moving things around just so there would be enough space to take a photo! Also, I wanted it to remain ‘overwhelming’ without looking messy. At one point he was down on all fours crawling under tables, moving boxes around. He loved this place and these things in it. After moving, stacking, and rearranging, we finally we got to a point where things were looking right.

In my mind the photos are almost incidental to the great conversation we had. At 77 he still had so much passion about art and life. He was thrilled to talk about each and every piece that we stumbled upon. He was a photographer as well, and I was delighted when he ran across some of the images he’d taken back in the 60s.

Very soon after our photo session Father Michael was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and he passed away on August 30th. Luckily he was around to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination in May.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I feel that these are rare events that not everyone gets to enjoy, and I’m a better person because of such encounters. I just hope that 2010 holds more opportunities like this one.

Jump

<a href="http://jeffreyworks.com/blog/uploaded_images/Kelly-788548.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I grew up on a beach in Florida. There's apparently sand and sunshine in my blood and I've learned that it's impossible to fight my basic, primal, beach-lovin' urges. I recently returned from a trip to visit my family and friends down there and I'm all ready to go back.

Chicago had it's first 1+ inch snow fall today. Now, I don't know if everyone on the road this morning had never seen snow, or if they were slowing down to gaze at the winter wonderland, but my commute to today's shoot was just a little under 2 hours. Honestly, that's... that's just... grrrr....

So I'm happy that I just found some images of my summertime tomatoes. I love growing tomatoes. I usually have ones of all different shapes, sizes, & When RIC contacted me to photograph the annual run up the Willis Tower I instantly knew that I could check off one more thing on my list of 'interesting Chicago experiences'. Although it did take me a moment or two when I thought, "Willis Tower? Where the heck is that?" before I remembered that the Sears Tower changed it's name.

<a href="http://jeffreyworks.com/blog/uploaded_images/blog-3-730588.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; About 1000 people run all the way up the 103 floors of the tower. Well, to be honest, many of them walked. But that's still a whole lot of climbing. One of the most challenging things for me was the location. I mean, stairwells aren't pretty, spacious, or interesting. How was I going to creatively capture the runners in such a cramped space? I stuck with a wide angle lens for most of it, and allowed some blur to convey motion.

There were some pretty inspiring stories throughout the day. Seven firefighters walked all the way up wearing their uniforms to honor the firefighters that did the say thing in the towers during 9/11. Those helmets alone way 5 1/2 pounds. Imagine that for a minute. I did a bunch of running up and down in small sections carrying my camera gear and I was hurting. But I couldn't complain after watching those guys.

At the top some of the patients of RIC were there to hand out the medals.

Once the hoopla started to subside I couldn't resist taking one shot of myself standing in the new plexiglass ledge that they built off the edge of the observation deck. That's 103 stories- straight down :)

<a href="http://jeffreyworks.com/blog/uploaded_images/blog-5-746490.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; While I was shooting things up top, she was at the bottom. RIC has created a page with many other photos that we took this day. You can see them here:
RIC SkyRise images

Lellbach Builders

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; They needed images that they could use in upcoming catalogs, brochures, and the web to promote the next series of classes. The Arboretum, for those of you that don't know, is a wonderful place to roam around. It has always been a great spot for a picnic, with it's miles of scenic locations and hiking paths. But I like how they have reinvented themselves over the past decade with the Children's Garden, summer concerts, and fantastic educational programs.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wxpWmiY7lvU/SsTa691ug2I/AAAAAAAAAIU/LHFZZH1B59Q/s1600-h/blog-003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; But fortunately the clouds helped me by diffusing the light. Otherwise I would have been fighting the shadows as I photographed people moving under the trees. The first thing I documented was an adult class on tree identification.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I followed them as they roamed through the prairie looking for webs and creepy, crawly things.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wxpWmiY7lvU/SsTb7hO3f_I/AAAAAAAAAIc/2DTGyGIBwpk/s1600-h/blog-004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The daughter of one of the employee's was turning two, and she had agreed to let it be photographed. Around mid-day on Saturday, a buddy of mine sent me an email that read, "Jeffrey, I hear you're photographing my daughter's birthday tomorrow!"

Small world! Sure enough, his wife works at the Arboretum and it was his daughter with the birthday. What an amazing coincidence, but I'm so glad it happened. It took off a layer of awkwardness from trying to walk right in and photograph a party filled with people that had no idea who I was. Instead it was easier for me to jump in there and get some great images

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wxpWmiY7lvU/SsTd3MOETKI/AAAAAAAAAIs/j-kEy7xOOMw/s1600-h/blog-008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; It's wonderful going to places I've never been before and experiencing new sights and sounds. Last month I was in San Antonio for work with an insurance company, and I got to see the Alamo for the first time. Last week I was in North Carolina working for a different company, and had a wonderful soul-food dinner in downtown Charlotte.

But I came away with mostly business photos from those trips. Instead, I thought I'd share with you some photographs I took in Washington DC towards the beginning of the summer. Not many people have seen them, and it really was an interesting trip. As always, click on any image to enlarge it-

I was hired to document a business group's legislative trip to DC. I'd been there before, but not like this. I really enjoyed seeing some of the behind the scenes stuff, like the underground passageways that connect many of the official buildings surrounding the Capitol, allowing the senators and congressmen to move quickly from one place to another without fighting traffic.

The group I was following met with everyone they could, both Democratic and Republican. This is Congresswoman Judy Biggert, who was very friendly and engaging considering she had just flown back from an all-female Congressional delegation to Afghanistan, and only had a few hours of sleep before she met with us.

At one point I had an opportunity to get on to the roof of the US Chamber Of Commerce building. It has an amazing view, and many of the news organizations use it when they are reporting from DC because of the perfect backdrop. I also had along my telephoto lens, and captured some images where you can see the four guys dressed all in black on top of the White House with their rifle bags and telescopes. BUT, I suddenly realized that there might be somebody important out there that wouldn't like it if I posted those :) And I'd rather not have the guys in black outfits knock on my door at 3am, ya know?
I was very fortunate to have about 3 hours to myself during one of the mornings. So I used that time to roam around the Capitol, checking out the Smithsonian and many of the highlights. At one point I found myself by the Washington Monument. I decided to amuse myself by trying to photograph it in a way that made it difficult to tell it was the Washington Monument. I put the 15mm fisheye lens on my Canon 5D, and gave myself over to the distortion. I have some interesting ones where it just looks like a giant pyramid. But I like this image as well-
And I kept the 15mm on my camera as I strolled over to the Lincoln Memorial. It's challenging when you photograph something that has already been photographed a million times before.

Day Four- That's a wrap, people!

Ah, Labor Day is here. It's the last day of the Fling, and time to relax a little and have some fun. After a raucous after-party last night, it was good to see so many of the Jaycees up bright & early for the parade. Look how chipper everyone is with their cups of... uh, what I can only assume is orange juice? Or is that Pepto?

We have the biggest Labor Day parade in the state. It's really something to see. My kids usually come home with bags and bags of goodies that are handed out. This year it included candy, toys, shirts, a bag of bread, flags, flyswatters, assorted propaganda... you name it! Of course we have the usual parade fare; bands, politicans, businesses and such.

But there are always a few that make you scratch your head. We use to have the Star Wars appreciation society march in everything. But for the past few years there has been another group with way too much time on their hands:
Yep, they have it all; authentic vehicles, costumes, props... it's the full package.

I went on a number of the rides this year. I don't know why they all have to spin. Enough with the spinning, people! I'm still a little dizzy... I hope that goes away soon. There was one ride that didn't spin. It just went back and forth. I'm sharing this photo of it just so you can laugh with me at the doofus in the middle talking on his cell phone (click to enlarge.)
Dude, you are a teenage boy that is lucky enough to be sitting next to a teenage girl on a carnival ride. Hang up your stupid phone and enjoy that moment. Done. And not a moment too soon. My legs feel like I walked 20 miles this weekend. And according to Lightroom I took 3,864 photos. I think I'll give my cameras a week off. They deserve it.

I don't know how we'll top the success of this one, but I'm sure we'll give it our best shot.

Day Three- Music by Train... we can see the light at the end of the tunnel

Sunday Night- Train. This is the night we've all been looking forward to. It was a sold out show. I'm not sure about the actual number, because every time I spoke with someone else the number kept going up. I first heard 6500 people, then 8,000, then 10,000! So I'm not sure what to believe. All I know is that it was quite a crowd, and it looked amazing from the stage

The band was pretty good, and they get extra points in my book because they actually let us shoot for three (yes, 3!) whole songs. There were twice as many photographers trying to get into the pit area. I do have some admiration for the high school kids who manage to talk their way in by claiming that they're shooting for their school paper. But I tell each of them to please stay out of my way or I will run them the hell over. And bless them, they do.

It's a good thing they stayed out of my way. The lead singer was one of the more active front men I've photographed. He ran back and forth on that stage like his pants were on fire. It was difficult to find that perfect position because he didn't stay in one place for more than a second or two. Luckily I had three whole songs to figure it out.

The sponsor tent was so crowded that I decided to roam around the festival and see what else was going on. I was hanging out with some friends at the other Entertainment stage when I got a phone call. Apparently the Jaycees were going to get some photos with Train right after the show, and the show was about to end. So I hightailed it through the park to the backstage area again- the whole time thinking how glad I was that I brought my flash. I had been cursing the extra weight, but now it was worth the trouble.

The guys in the band were actually pretty decent and friendly. I think we stressed out their manager a bit... but managers are easy to stress out.

But enough about that! Because, the last big night concert was finally over and it was time to kick back and have some fun. My friend Stacy celebrated by demonstrating the techniques that she hopes will win an award at next year's Strongman competition.
And then we blew off some steam like only the Jaycees can do. I'm not sure what that kid's doing there... pretend that he's writing a report, or doing research for some homework assignment.

Fling- Day Three. Part 1.

Sunday. Today the fling was all about the food; baking contests, eating competitions, etc. It was all quite appropriate since around midnight my stomach made my brain realize that all I'd eaten during Friday and Saturday was bratwurst and beer. I calculated that I'd consumed around 10 brats... and it became quite apparent that I needed to mix up my diet a little.

First up was the apple pie eating competition-

Later there was the macaroni-n-cheese eating. I think we'll have to file this one under 'the agony of defeat'.

Soon after that I met up with a few friends over at the Apple Pie Baking contest. I got to sample a few and the ones I tried were absolutely amazing. Or maybe my body was just happy to have some apples in it. These girls were the servers, and the one they are cutting now was my personal favorite. It had apples, blackberries, and raspberries inside. And that little white bowl had a delicious sauce that was for dribbling over the pie.
These are my friends who had the difficult job of acting as judges. One 12 year old girl took 3 of the 5 prizes.
Now, I am very, very, very lucky to not know who the Wizards of Waverly Place are. But apparently the tween crowd thinks they're amazing, and they flip their collective coconuts whenever a Disney Channel person is around. These girls showed up at 6am to be first in line. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I'm guessing that there were around 5 million, trillion, zillion girls in line.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jeffreyworks.com/blog/2009/09/fling-day-three-part-1.html' title='Fling- Day Three. Now, the last thing I want to do is take my two cameras and all my gear out in a crowd of drunken suburbanites pretending to be rednecks for an evening (yes, I'm generalizing. There were one or two sober suburbanites.) Still, if that's where I have to be to get the best shot, then that's where I have to be.

As me and two other photographers were moving through the crowd to find the best position, the phone calls started coming in from Jaycees people behind the stage. Luckily one of them convinced Jason Aldean's people to let us be up by the stage for the first song. So we quickly ran up front and settled in again.

The story for me this night was the crowd. These images are from the earlier part of the day only. I ran back home to download and do some things around the house for awhile. It is nice only living a few blocks from the festival.

Last Fling is chock full o' crazy midwest family entertainment. I thought I'd show you some of the interesting things I've captured so far today. There was the giant tortoise (seen above). But what I would have to say was the most unexpectedly hilarious thing was the baby races, or as the Jaycees dubbed them 'The Diaper Derby."

Parents went absolutely nuts trying to lure their kid from one side of the mat to the other. The jangled keys, dragged their point-and-shoot camera on the ground, yelled, and just about every other thing your can think of to get them moving. One old lady even used her walking cane because (as she kept yelling out), "Here it is! You love Grannies cane! See, that's what he wants!"

And luckily it was sunny and warm because the water balloon dodge ball competition went pretty well too-

Last Fling 2009- Day 1

Before I even took my first photo, I somehow managed to do something that has never happened to me in over 10 years of photographing events. My beloved 15mm lens managed to fall right off one of the cameras hanging on my shoulder. I can't even imagine the series of events that had to take place for that to happen. Somehow the release button would have to be bumped in such a way that it was pressed in, and the lens rotated in order for it to drop off.

It's dinged up pretty well, and I haven't had the chance to test out it's sharpness. I'm hoping for the best.

But I bravely marched on. Friday night is the easiest night for me. All I was really needed to cover was the bands.

First up was blues legend Lonnie Brooks

The weather was absolutely perfect, and the crowd was really into Brooks

Finally it was time for Robert Cray. There were two things that happened that made it difficult to get a good photograph (besides the usual sketchy concert lighting). First, as was confirmed by a friend that was shooting for another magazine, the stage was about 8 - 10 inches taller than it was last year. It was very difficult to see the whole band and the whole stage from the photographer pit. Secondly, Robert Cray played about halfway back from the front of the stage. I'm glad I'm tall, but I could still really only see him from the waist up. I took a few shots by reaching up and resting the camera on the stage to get a better angle.

The music was good, but to be honest I thought it should have been a little louder. Over in the sponsor tent it was difficult to hear it. I remember really ~feeling~ it the past few years. It wasn't a real rockin' & jumpin' show. BUT, it was the busiest Friday night concert I think we've had for years. I'm guessing that it was a good night as far as the fund raising went.

One last thing- I was happy that unlike Rib Fest this year, at least I was allowed near the stage to get some good images. Robert Cray's management only let me shoot during the first song, but it's better than nothing :)

I'm sure I'm like many photographers- I occasionally need inspirational people in my life to help move some of my ideas along. Margaret is one of those people. She was there at some key emotional and creative points in my life. Over the years we created some amazing photographs together. The first one we ever did (you can see here) is still one of my favorites.

Well, she is set to move to Poland soon. But before she leaves we managed to put together a few photo projects just for kicks and to see what we could get out of them.

Margaret was on a women's Rugby team in college. And I had the idea of a rugby girl in an unlikely setting. So that's how we ended up standing in the middle of the LaSalle St canyon in Chicago, trying not to get hit by cars and waiting for a moment when it all came together.

We of course got lots of honks, and many strange looks. One woman driving an SUV actually stopped next to us, rolled down her window and said to Margaret, "Are you OK? Do you need any help?"

As a side note- I'm now the proud owner of a used rugby ball if anyone needs one.
